A fleet of 46 boats, which includes 17 green fleet, 12 intermediate and 17 open, will set sail in the regional South Australian town of Wallaroo this weekend, for the class state championships.

Racing will be held on both Saturday and Sunday and will cap off a jam-packed season for the South Australian fleet, which included the recent national championships at the Largs Bay Sailing Club, the SA Youth Tri Series before Christmas and the recent South Australian Youth Championships.

The event saw a number of interstate competitors last year, most likely due to the fact last year’s event was held at the upcoming nationals venue, however this year there are not any entries from outside South Australia.

A stronger intermediate fleet will be seen this year due to a change in the structure where the intermediate racing will be held on the green fleet course with no coaching. The idea was that it would encourage current intermediate sailors into the open fleet as well as current green fleet sailors into the intermediate fleet.

The clubs that are represented include Largs Bay, Adelaide, Brighton & Seacliff, Port Vincent and Goolwa, which shows great strength of the class throughout South Australia.

Some of the top contenders in the Open fleet include Quinn Auricht and Alexi Wigglesworth, both of which are going on to represent the country at the next world championships.

Ben Hinks, Harry Higgins, Jonas Barrett, Taran Sanderson and Myles Wilson are also going to be at the top end of the fleet and will be pushing the leaders all weekend.
